Please join us on July 23, 2011, 7:30 p.m. at the Rio Theater in Santa Cruz for an exclusive FINAL showing of The Westsiders! This award winning Joshua Polmer film chronicles the lives of three celebrated Santa Cruz surfers and best friends: Darryl “Flea” Virostko, Shawn “Barney” Barron, and Jason “Ratboy” Collins. They survive drug addiction and psychological issues all while gaining international notoriety in the competitive world of professional surfing.

Doors open at 7 p.m. All proceeds of this event go to support FleaHab!

The edgy and raw documentary has won awards from The Newport Beach Film Festival, Santa Cruz Film Festival, Honolulu Film Festival, LA Movie Awards and now the “Golden Lobster” award given to the best film in Portland Maine Internation Film Festival.

Synopsis:
From surfing innovations to gritty localism, follow the rise and fall of The Westsiders surf tribe through the eyes of three best friends from the original ‘Surf City’: Santa Cruz, California. Best friends Daryl “Flea” Virostko, Shawn “Barney” Barron, and Jason “Ratboy” Collins bonded by common tragedy and their love of surfing. They live through shattered homes, drug addiction, other psychological issues and hard-core localism to achieve their dream of becoming professional surfers before the age of 24. To surf the notorious Steamer Lane, they had to join ‘The Westsiders’ Surf Tribe and go face to face with Vince Collier, aka “The Godfather of The Westside”. Vince, a massive brute force, ran Steamer Lane with his own version of street justice. This film explores The Westsiders as the latest chapter in the fascinating history of Santa Cruz, California.

Over the years I’ve tried to make a habit of loading up the truck and wandering the coast when the time feels right. Generally for multiple reasons, sometimes chasing swells, visiting friends, or even just to break the pattern and routines of daily life. Whatever the case or outcome, it is always a breath of fresh air and provides the opportunity to clear the head, returning home with a better perspective on life.

Two weeks ago my girlfriend Grace and I decided to hit the road with little to no agenda other than camping, searching for waves and visiting with friends along the way. I’ve always found it amazing what kinds of things materialize and the people we run into when your not bound by plans.

Our first few days we hung around Santa Barbara and Ventura, spending some time surfing and shooting photos with my mate Seth de Roulet. Moving along to the south, we grabbed a campsite along the Pacific Coast Highway near Leo Carillo just north of Malibu. Although the surf may have been less than epic, we lucked into some great logging waves. With a small south swell running we scored due to the fact the river was dug out earlier this winter, creating this machine like sandbar inside first point Malibu.

Further down the road we stopped in at Body Glove international for a tour and shook some hands along the way. Despite the tsunami warning and the chaos in the world, my team manager Chuy twisted my arm to surf and we lucked into a few waves in the south bay as well. However, having a look at the swell charts it was plain to see the potential and possibilities back towards the north.

With tricky conditions and plenty of swell, we chased our tails, bouncing around between Ventura and Santa Barbara for the next week or so. Although there was an abundance of surf, southerly coastal winds made it more challenging than usual to find the best waves. Regardless of the amounts spent fueling our vehicles at the pump, we managed to find more than a few good sessions and opportunities to shoot photos along the way. Watching all the point and beach breaks fire along that stretch of coast during a good run of swell could make and lover or the sea jump for joy.

After hearing enough good surf reports from Santa Cruz and the tragic news of Sion’s passing at Mavericks, it seemed appropriate to start making the journey back towards home. With a bit of luck, the last session proved to be the most rewarding, leaving me with a smile on my face the whole way home.

The surfers have voted and Mavericks is ON! And SC Family Josh Loya will be in the mix as 24 of the worlds best compete for the title in Half Moon Bay. There are numerous places to watch it online or you can go to El Palomar and The Crepe Place to watch it live. We will find one and embed it here. Big Wave Surf Legend Breaks His Silence Jeff Clark Files Suit against Mavericks Surf Ventures, Inc.

Half Moon Bay, Calif. – Mavericks pioneer and big wave surf legend Jeff Clark filed a lawsuit today against Mavericks Surf Ventures Inc. (MSV), the company he co-founded to run the Mavericks Surf Contest, and its current directors. The lawsuit cites breach of contract, breach of fiduciary duty and fraud.

The lawsuit comes one week after an already re-scheduled mediation was canceled by MSV attorney Paul Marotta and CEO Keir Beidling, claiming the Mavericks Surf Contest would be held that week. It was not.

“I’ve waited patiently and remained quiet in an effort to settle our issues in private, without casting a shadow over the contest that I founded. But it’s obvious MSV has no intention of working this out. They have forced me to file suit in order to move on with my life,” Clark said.

“When I signed on to partner with Keir and Evolve Sports, I trusted them to do the right thing, to honor my spirit and passion for surfing,” Clark said. “I made a mistake and I trusted the wrong people. They have refused to honor the contracts they created and have turned the contest into a corporate circus.”

The complaint, filed with the Superior Court of San Francisco County, states that MSV breached its contracts with Clark, withheld payments on those contracts, and breached its fiduciary duties to shareholders by the Board’s self-dealing, squandering of corporate assets and failure to disclose even basic financial and other corporate information. The suit claims that, in breaching their fiduciary duties, MSV and its current directors acted with oppression, fraud and malice.

“Jeff is a nice guy who, on his own, wouldn’t seek vindication through legal action. Jeff is one of the world’s greatest big wave surfers, is passionate about his work and cares about surfing and the surf community,’ said Clark’s attorney Richard Mooney. “It is my job to care about Jeff and his interests. And in this case, his interests were harmed by corporate executives who made promises they never intended to keep.”

Clark is credited with pioneering Mavericks, the big wave surf spot off the California coast, at the age of 17. Clark surfed Mavericks alone for 15 years before it became recognized by the surf community as one of the biggest and most dangerous big waves in the world. In 1998, Clark founded the Mavericks Surf Contest with Quicksilver, calling it the Men Who Ride Mountains event. Clark partnered with Evolve Sports in 2003 to represent him as an athlete, and later they created Mavericks Surf Ventures to run the Mavericks Surf Contest. MSV terminated Clark as Contest Director in June 2009.
