You may have seen Bud Freitas in our America Issue [June 2011] listed as one of the Top 10 Most Underrated Surfers in the US. For us, it was a no-brainer. For him, it was an honor, and it came at a time when things seemed to be coming together for the Santa Cruz Eastsider. Did he win a contest? Invent a move? Do a kickflip? No, no, no. Then why? He quit the booze; he quit the drugs. Got himself a nice girl and a clear head. He’s back on a promising path, but as Bud explains over lunch at a Santa Cruz New Leaf market, his newfound good life isn’t contingent on “making it” in surfing. —Taylor Paul

ON SANTA CRUZ:

“The waves are good. It’s easy. Everything’s here — your family’s here, your friends are here — it’s your little habitat. You go out and get every wave you want. Why would I want to leave Pleasure Point? It’s a perfect right point for me and I get every wave I want. But it’s held me back a lot. I’m down to break out of it.”

ON THE PAST:

“My outlook was just to get hammered. That was it. Party party party. l look back at the money I made from surfing and it just went to booze. Strip bars and booze. It was fun; I was young. But I never looked at the big picture. Every dollar I had was my last and I’d just go off with it. Alcohol really changed me, I’d go on trips and drink my ass off and not do what I was supposed to do. I should have been more focused. But back then it was all-or-nothing-Bud. One beer touched my lips and it was on.”

ON THE PRESENT:

“When you stop partying you see who your real friends are. You don’t have the same people calling you everyday. They just fall off of the face of the earth ‘cause you’re not drinking with them and buying up the bar.

Ratboy’s been like a father figure to me. He always got mad at me when I was drinking ‘cause he knew what I had, like, ‘You’re f–king talented, why don’t you use it?’ He wants to help me go big. He’s amped to see me blow up.

Being sober has changed my outlook on life a lot. I actually surf for more than 20 minutes and I sit in the water and take my time and don’t rush things. I used to get pissed off about everything. And now I’m like, ‘F–k it. I’ll surf all day long.’ Last trip I did to Mexico I surfed more than anyone, just loving it.”

ON THE FUTURE:

“I have a surf school now. I want to get married, have kids and have a killer life, and not be this drunk ‘I coulda been a pro surfer’ guy. I still want to be that pro surfer, but I just want my image to be clean.

If [my sponsors] want to help me go big then let’s do this, but if they want me to be their Santa Cruz guy who just rips in Santa Cruz, then so be it. But if I had the chance I had four years ago with Rusty, to travel the world and do the tour, then I’d do it so much differently. I’d put my head down and focus.

The perfect year? I get the cover of SURFING mag. I win an Innersection. And I do well in the Coldwater — I’m not saying win the thing — but do really well and show people what I’m made of.

In the end though, I just want to be a successful human, be it through surfing or any other way.”

SC Family in Village Yoga book “Bend a Little”

Through the hustle and bustle of our daily routines and living amongst the modern world, stress levels seem to effect most of us regularly or in different times of our lives.

In a day and age were most of our lineups are over run with surf enthusiasts, ridding waves for stress relief could end up having the reverse effect. With summer just around the corner and crowds thickening, these might be good times to choose our battles or turn to other outlets.

Over the years some of my peers and I have took an interest in yoga and are constantly surprised how many familiar faces show up in the the local studios. Last week a few of Santa Cruz Skate and Surf Shop’s team riders turned up in the pages of a book released by our dear friends at Village Yoga titled, “Bend a Little.” Marking their 10 year anniversary, the book consists of images and testimonials from a large variety of yogi and yogini’s who lives have been enriched through their practice. Get a sneak peak of the book here.

Although through the years my yoga practice has been inconsistent, there’s been no doubt in my mind that my life seems closer to harmony the more I attend class. Even in challenging times in my life, just showing up has guided me one posture at a time or one foot in front of the other. Although surfing has taken a front seat for most of my life, yoga keeps the wheels turning and has allowed me continue to push my surfing in ways that otherwise wouldn’t be possible.

No matter where I’m at in my life, I always feel the best version of myself after walking out the doors at Village Yoga.

The other half of THE Chesters and Bass Nectar expert, Cole can slap the lip like no other. SC Family member from the ripe age of 5, this kid has been representing for over 15 years. Skating, Surfing and Skimming since he could walk, he is another natural in the water. Known to hang tough with Zane Keith and goes by the occasional nick name of “Gator” amongst others the sense of humor reeks of Jackass style pranks. Body Glove signs Jamie O’Brien and there is a Santa Cruz connection

Surfing’s proverbial misfit genius Jamie O’Brien has signed on to a 3 year full ride deal with Body Glove apparel and wetsuits.

But lets break it down…Its December on the North Shore of Hawaii with the Body Glove family (<~~~ read) and Keith Terriberry pulls the WHO is J.O.B. movie out of his backpack “You see this movie yet DK??” I swipe it out of his hands and stare at it, Jamie had just visited the shop READ HERE in October for the Red Bull Santa Cruz Premier of WHO is J.O.B. and about 100 kids came to the movie and jaws dropped all over as Jamie did a meet and greet inside Santa Cruz Skate and Surf Shop first then popped over to the Rio Theater where he introduced the movie and held a question and answer for the kids after.

So we both run upstairs like high school kids with the movie and pop it in for team manager Matt “Chuy” Chernega, Matt Patterson, Scott Daley, Noah Gellis, Jenna Meistrel, Mike Balzer, Cheyne Magnusson, Matt Pagan, Alex Gray, Scott Smith, Brandon Bowden and over the course of the trip Greg Browning, Gabe Kling, Holly Beck and other random drop ins. WHO is J.O.B. was on autoplay as the surfing spoke for itself and the soundtrack had an eery way of sucking you in. Then we would watch Body Glove’s Drop Zone Fiji and the pattern was already beginning to show….a combo was brewing.

The six degrees of separations are this:

Tarp Surfing event raises 500 pounds of food for Grind Out Hunger!

As the holidays approach its hard to forget that 1 in 4 kids in Santa Cruz County are going hungry. Grind Out Hunger is the charity we started and we support it 100%. 2009 over 130,000 pounds of food was raised to help feed hungry children in Santa Cruz County. 2010 we want to double that to 250,000 pounds and we are 500 pounds closer.

Tarp Surfing legends Homer Henard, Omar Etcheverry, Chris Killen Seth Migdail, Dana “SkimShady” and DK pull some major Tarp Kegs to raise money/food for Grind Out Hunger special thanks to Timmy of Aloha Island Grille for the killah grinds!!! The Chesters for the video production and Black Tide for the song!
