Almost Chaos in Santa Cruz Skate and Surf Shop 1pm Saturday November 19th

Almost Chaos is a classic rock/reggea/funk/folk band from Santa Cruz, CA.  At just 14 and 15 years old the members include Jose Picazo, Derek Mather, Mac Hesson and Cameron Smith. The four member band came together in 2008 at just 11 and 12 years old, through a community music program called “Be in Your Own Band”.  With the guidance of Nat Condit-Shultz the young musicians released their first CD in November of 2009.  With seven original songs the band soon began playing at local events.  “One gig led to another” says Jose Picazo and soon the band was scheduled  for over 100 gigs in 2009-2010.  Since then the band has raised over $40,000.00 for local schools and community charities, including “Jacobs Heart”. 
Almost Chaos has been recognized by the Mayor of Santa Cruz and Congressman Sam Farr for their “contribution to their community”.  It has been their pleasure to play at “the Catalyst, the Crows Nest, Britannia Arms, the Rio Theater, the Monterey Strawberry Festival, the Monarch Butterfly Festival, Your Music Magazines/Music Olympiks. It’s been about 13 years since the members of local punk rock band Fury 66 have played a live show together. Tonight they are reuniting one last time to bring Santa Cruz County the punk show of the year. Benefiting local charity Grind Out Hunger and Multiple Sclerosis Research, this show is going to rock the walls of the Catalyst for 2 great causes. We have been informed that online tickets are SOLD OUT, but there will be a LIMITED amount of tickets available at the door.

We had the honor of joining the band during a couple of their practices at The Compound Recording Studio in Ben Lomond. We were able to sit down with the band and chat about their past memories as well as their feelings about the reunion show.

It has been a hectic week leading up to this show. Promotion, interviews, articles, photos…we even made a trip to Oakland to pick up  custom made skate decks for the show. The lovely Jessica McDermott of Staircase tattoo on Front Street offered FREE Fury 66 Shield tattoos to the general public yesterday. We took a trip over there with Fury 66 guitarist, Jeff Frady, got tattooed, snapped some pics and hung out for a bit. Thanks to Jessica for doing that! We made sure she got a Fury 66 skate deck.

As the hours pass and it gets closer and closer to show time emotions are running high. Jeff Frady contacted us this morning expressing his feelings as he counts down the minutes to show time, “This shit is so touching. WAY more than I though it was gonna be. It’s UNREAL how many people are reaching out to me/us via Facebook, my phone is BLOWING UP!”
This show is a big deal to the members of Fury 66 as well as their long time fans. “It’s like a Santa Cruz Reunion” the band explained in our interview with them. They cant wait to see everyone together in one place, one last time. Whether you are a die hard Fury fan or not, this show is NOT to be missed. Its going to be the talk of the town for years to come.

Last Friday was our 2nd SC Photo Wall reception as part of the First Friday Santa Cruz Art Tours. The successful event brought in a crowd of friends, family, and community. The wall featured 3 local photographers; Shawn Hatjes, Matt Kurvin, and Terry Way. We added a 2nd wall this month on which we had Seth Migdail and Nick Borelli’s work displayed for a 2nd round. During the evening Shawn Hatjes had prints spread out on a table for people to sift through and Matt Kurvin, a recent finalist for the Follow the Light Foundation Photography Award, had dozens of matted prints available in addition to his pieces hanging on the wall. Terry Way’s 3 large prints hanging on the wall got a great response, especially his panorama of Capitola.

Thanks to Bruddah Timmy Hunt for giving us the grinds as well as a stack of stickers to give out to those who attended the reception. Local musician and songwriter, Ariana Rice graciously showed up to play music for everyone at the reception. Synopsis:
From surfing innovations to gritty localism, follow the rise and fall of The Westsiders surf tribe through the eyes of three best friends from the original ‘Surf City’: Santa Cruz, California. Best friends Daryl “Flea” Virostko, Shawn “Barney” Barron, and Jason “Ratboy” Collins bonded by common tragedy and their love of surfing. They live through shattered homes, drug addiction, other psychological issues and hard-core localism to achieve their dream of becoming professional surfers before the age of 24. To surf the notorious Steamer Lane, they had to join ‘The Westsiders’ Surf Tribe and go face to face with Vince Collier, aka “The Godfather of The Westside”. Vince, a massive brute force, ran Steamer Lane with his own version of street justice. This film explores The Westsiders as the latest chapter in the fascinating history of Santa Cruz, California.

SC Photo Wall Opening at the Santa Cruz Skate and Surf Shop last night was a huge success. In preparation for the event we moved the clothing racks around to make space for people to mingle, set up a table with food from Pono Hawaiian Grill, and had local musician Katie Ekin set up and play music right next to the photo wall. We also set up a table with Shawn Hatjes’ prints out and a computer running a slideshow of Seth Migdail’s work . Nick Borelli brought in a bunch of extra framed shots that we set up around the shop.

First Friday Art Tours of Santa Cruz

We had about 80 people come to this opening event. Mixture of surfers, skaters, photographers, family, and friends. The place was pretty much packed from 6pm-9pm with everyone socializing, eating food, listening to music, and admiring art. There were kids running around playing ping pong, foosball, watching surf videos, all while their parents were able to enjoy and evening of community and art. We will be looking to do First Friday Receptions in the near future so stay tuned!!

During a recent remodel of the Santa Cruz Skate and Surf Shop we cleared a 17x8ft wall so we could devote it to art, photos in particular. There is so much photographic talent in and around the Santa Cruz area; from skate to surf photography, beach sunsets to the Santa Cruz mountains, we wanted to have a place that could feature them all.

The “SC Photo Wall”, as we now call it, features 3 photographers at a time. Our first round of photographs are under the “surf life” genre. We have surf life shots from Shawn Hatjes, empty wave shots from Nick Borelli, and Insane action shots of SC locals charging at Mavericks from Seth Migdail.

The SC Photo Wall is up and running, but we are having out official Opening Reception on Friday June 3rd from 6-9pm. This opening is part of the First Friday Art Tour Santa Cruz rotation, which features art galleries all over Santa Cruz County . We plan to have the SC Photo Wall as a regular participant in the First Friday rotation.

Bryan Stow, the San Francisco Giants fan beaten to within an inch of his life outside Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles on April 1. Stow, a 42-year-old paramedic and father of two from Santa Cruz, California, was wearing a Giants jersey as he made his way to his car after the game when he was jumped by a pair of 20-something young men wearing Dodger blue. Witnesses say that as the men brutally beat Stow they cursed the Giants. Stow is still hospitalized in a medically induced coma in Los Angeles.

The event that took place last night was way more than anyone could have asked for. Amazing people came together and donated from the heart, not only their money but for some prize possessions.

KDON 102.5 and The Morning Madhouse led by DJ Showbiz made the night spectacular. It was not without emotion as Showbiz asked for a moment of silence for Bryan Stow, it slammed right into the opening ceremony for the first home game of the year for the San Francisco Giants vs. LA Dodgers. The game was dedicated to Bryan Stow and a message was spoken by the teams that while this is a rivalry, we all go home to our families in the end. Stop the violence was the overarching theme.  You could have heard a pin drop in the Palomar…it was emotional.

After everyone was reminded why we were there, the festivities began as Bryan would have wanted them to. Auction items were flying quicker than Showbiz and Danielle could keep track. First to go was the replica World Series trophy for $550.

Next up was the autographed Barry Bonds bat donated by Eddie Gauer of Tanners Cove that fetched $650 in a heated live auction.

As the evening continued numerous items were Live Auctioned, Silent Auctioned and raffled off with over $20,000 being raised in total for the Bryan Stow recovery fund.

I have never seen the Palomar that packed on a Monday night, and in the back of my mind I could not get the visual of Bryan Stow’s smiling face…and the fact that he was lying in a hospital bed completely unaware as to how many people care about him, his family and his recovery. It is truly heart warming to see the community come out in full force. Thank you to some many people, you all made a difference last night.

Below was a song dedicated to Bryan Stow and was sung at the top of everyone’s lungs. Hopefully Bryan will one day realize how many people truly care.
